Eurodram committee reports 2025

 

 

العَرَبيّة / Arabic
Following a period of inactivity, new members were invited to the Arabic committee which from November 2025 onward is to be coordinated by Annamaria Bianco and Omar Fertat.

 

Azərbaycanca / Azeri
The Azerbaijani Committee of EURODRAM continued its work in 2025. The committee’s activities were carried out within the framework of the CHARACTERS Modern Drama Festival under the coordination of playwright and theatre curator Ismayil Iman. The committee maintained the same composition of members, with no new additions.

In March 2025, “Argon” by Shabnam Kheyrulla, the winning play of the Azerbaijani playwriting competition determined in 2024, was staged at the Azerbaijan State Theatre YUĞ: https://yugteatri.az/az/single/arqon-tamasasi-244

Additionally, this play – first recognized in Azerbaijan through the competition – was later produced on several other stages across the country, both state and independent.

In June 2025, the CHARACTERS Modern Drama Festival, in collaboration with the British Council Azerbaijan, presented “CHARACTERS Presenting British Drama” – an educational three-day playwriting workshop led by British playwright Rory Mullarkey: https://teatro.az/az/post/characters-britaniya-dramaturgiyasini-teqdim-edir-1320

The programme also included staged readings in Azerbaijani translation of contemporary British plays by Rory Mullarkey and Zinnie Harris. The initiative aimed to strengthen connections between Azerbaijani theatre practitioners and the UK’s contemporary drama scene.

Applications will be accepted until February 1, 2026, and three winning plays will be selected and announced in March 2026.

 

български / Bulgarian
In 2025 Bulgarian Committee consisted of 14 members (9 females and 5 males, complete list), with active members for the selection 2025 – 7 members (6 females and 1 male). Since 2025, the committee coordinator has been Iliyana Hubenova, with Gergana Dimitrova as co-coordinator.

Members are stage directors, theater producers, translators, writers, scenographers, actors, cultural managers, theater researcher and theoretician.

For the selection of 2025, 10 plays were submitted. The Committee selected the following plays:

All selected plays were presented at the fourteenth edition of  ProText platform. The plays were presented in a special performance-reading format developed by ProText, in the spaces of National Theatre ‘Ivan Vazov’, Toplocentrala and for the second time a play from the committee’s selection was presented outside the capital, at the Municipal Theatre ‘Lyubomir Kabakchiev’ – in Kazanlak.

Català / Catalan
The Catalan committee, coordinated by Sala Beckett/Obrador Internacional de Dramatúrgia, is currently formed by 7 members. This year some of the members have resigned or have asked to be replaced by someone else, so this is the last year of this committee.

In 2025 the 3 selected plays translated from other languages into Catalan were:

-Cacophony [Cacophony] by Molly Taylor, translated from English by Oriol Puig Grau and Anna Serrano Gatell

As for the 2024 selected plays originally written in Catalan, some of them have been translated into other languages:

El gos [The dog] by Lluïsa Cunillé has been translated into Galician by Alfonso Becerra and into Bulgarian by Neva Mícheva.

Austràlia [Australia] by Israel Solà has been translated into Spanish by the author himself and is currently being translated into Greek by Maria Chatziemmanoui.

Čeština / Czech

The Czech committee has established itself this summer. It has six members including the coordinator Kristina Žantovská. We are dramaturgs actively working in the theatre and translators involved in German, Italian, Russian and Spanish languages.

We announced the Open call for plays in original language in September. On the webside of Prague City Theatres, where two of us are currently working, we created a page covering the Eurodram and the Open call as well.

Right now is the most important for us to make – Eurodram as itself – more visible and attractive for the recognised and starting playwrights. Eurodram has not got any recognition among the theatre professionals till now. We hope we’ll succeed.

 

Cymraeg / Welsh

In 2025 the committee worked with Literature Across Frontiers and Theatr Cymru to create translations into English of the three Welsh plays we selected in 2024.

  • Imrie by Nia Morais

All plays were translated by their authors following workshops and support from both organisations.

Translations of the previous selection (2024):

– The play Ave Joost by Caren Jeß (Selection 2024) was translated into French by Wolfgang Barth and Nicole Desjardins and was included in the program of the French theatre publisher „L’ARCHE éditeur & agence théâtrale“.

– The play Anorexia Feelgood-Songs by Fayer Koch (Selection 2024) was translated into Macedonian by Ana Ristoska Trpenoska, and an excerpt will be published in the Macedonian literary magazine ЕЛЕМЕНТИ (www.elementi.mk) by the end of this year.

Ελληνικά / Greek
In 2025, the Greek committee of Eurodram appointed new coordinators, Maria Athini and Theoni Dede, with former coordinator Andreas Flourakis continuing as a member of the committee and providing ongoing support. During this period, the committee expanded its membership by inviting new participants, including academics, translators, writers, and specialists in theatre studies. For the upcoming General Assembly to be held in Lyon in October 2025, Professor Eleni Gkini of the Open University of Cyprus was designated as the committee’s representative.

The committee signed two three-year memoranda of understanding with the University of the Peloponnese and with the drama organisation Analogio Festival, while two further memoranda with the Hellenic Open University and the Open University of Cyprus are currently in progress. Areas of collaboration include student involvement in selection committees and the translation of plays as part of their thesis or coursework; staged readings and performances involving students but also actors, directors, or dramaturgs – these events may form part of Eurodram’s annual festival or be organized as separate cultural activities in Athens, Nafplio or Cyprus or in any place where there is a greek-speaking audience; joint offer of seminars and workshops on playwriting, translation, and directing, either in person or online; and mutual promotion of activities through websites, social media, and printed material.
In collaboration with Cyprus, the Greek committee seeks to promote cultural exchange and showcase contemporary Greek-language playwriting within the Eurodram network. In addition, the committee updated its online platforms and reactivated the blog newriters with the aim of promoting emerging playwrights and presenting their work for translation.

The Estonian-speaking committee EURODRAM has been operating since 2023 and it has four members including translators and playwrights and a coordinator Liisi Aibel (Estonian Theatre Agency, Board Member & International relations specialist, Tallinn): liisi@teater.ee

We are spreading information about the Eurodram selections among Estonian theatre professionals through the Estonian Theatre Agency newsletter and website. A public competition for the selection of original works for 2026 is currently open.

The Estonian-speaking committee is affiliated with the Estonian Theatre Agency and its activities which include: the development and promotion of dramaturgy, the organization of playwriting competitions, the management of translation and copyright matters, the publication of books, and the collection of theatre statistics. In 2025, four volumes of translated plays were published in collaboration with committee, in French, English, Latvian, and Romanian:

  • French publishing house Parlatges published a French translation of Mehis Pihla’s play Business as Usual (“La Grande Lessive”, “Rahamaa” in Estonian) in its series “Éditions l’Espace d’un instant”, translated by Martin Carayol. The play features a foreword by the Estonian journalist Holger Roonemaa. The publication was supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
  • The first collection of Estonian plays in Romanian, Dramaturgie estonă contemporană (Contemporary Estonian Drama), was published in Romania. The collection was compiled and translated by Raluca Rădulescu and published by Teatrul azi, Romania’s most important publishing house dedicated to drama. The collection contains four plays: Jaan Tätte’s Highway Crossing or A Tale of a Golden Fish (1997), Mihkel Ulman’s Way to the Wardrobe (2000), Diana Leesalu and Kaarel B. Väljamäe’s Dashes on the Doorhandle (2017), Mehis Pihla’s Business as Usual (2024). The publication was supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
  • The collection of Estonian contemporary plays in Latvian Igauņu mūsdienu lugu izlase, was presented at the Estonian Embassy in Riga. The collection, compiled and translated by Daila Ozola, includes Andrus Kivirähk’s comedy Fatherland Swallows (2018), Tiit Aleksejev’s historical drama Livonian Requiem (2020), Piret Jaaks’ documentary play Same Words, Another Tune (2021), Mehis Pihla’s grotesque, ironic and daring tragicomedy Bладь и Mirъ (2019), Heneliis Notton’s youth drama Emesis (2021), Paavo Piik’s absurd and witty Out of your Depth (2022) and Siret Campbell’s subtle psychological drama of the future Beatrice (2017). The afterword is written by Heidi Aadma. The publication was supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
  • An English-language collection of Estonian plays was published as part of the Gothenburg Book Fair entitled Read Me, Love Me, Play Me! Five Estonian Plays from 1911 to 2020. The collection of contains English translations of the following plays: Ivar Põllu’s Past Continuous (2020), translated by Maarja Mänd, Piret Jaaks’ Rites of Passage (2019), translated by Adam Cullen, Martin Algus’ Something Real (2017), translated by Adam Cullen, Jaan Tätte’s Highway Crossing or The Tale of a Golden Fish (1997), translated by Krista Kaer, edited by Arthur Kincaid, August Kitzberg’s The Werewolf (1911), translated by Merike Lepasaar. The compilers and editors of the collection are Heidi Aadma and Liisi Aibel, the language editors are Dan O’Connell and Arthur Kincaid, and the designer is Indrek Sirkel. The afterword to the book was written by Sven Karja and translated by Kaur Sinissaar. The publication was supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.

 

Français / French

The committee has kept on being coordinated by Joëlle Chambon, with the help of Gilles Boulan and Dominique Dolmieu.

It gathered 31 members (21 women and 10 men), including 8 translators (related to Castillan, German and Italian) as well as theater professionals (playwrights, actors, directors), scholars and a publisher. Most of them fully participated to the readings and the final selection.

For the last session the committee received 64 texts translated from 20 languages. Each text has been read at least by 3 members. Then a short list of 11 texts has been drafted and read by every voting member. In the end, an online meeting was held to decide the final choice. Selected playwrights have been invited to join the committee for the session coming afterwards.

The French committee has created an official NGO to be able to ask for grants. It should be established in Lyon in the coming times.

Հայերեն / Armenian
The Armenian committee was restructured in September 2025, and we proceeded with the selection and appointment of its new members. Following this, we launched the call for submissions, which has already generated considerable interest. We are now awaiting the closing date in order to review the submitted works and officially announce the results.

 

Italiano / Italian

The Italian committee in 2025 didn’t make any selection. Michele Panella and Ornella Rosato and Cesare D’Arco from Theatron 2.0 are the referents of the committee. There has been changes in the jury, which consist in at least 12 members. We launched the selection for 2026.

Қазақ / Kazakh
In 2025, the Kazakh Committee consists of 4 members (2 men, 2 women) – including 1 playwright and 3 theatre critics.

The main platform for presenting plays in Kazakhstan is the Drama.KZ festival of contemporary Kazakh drama, which is held annually:

The festival was not held in 2025; it is scheduled for April 2026. We hope to present the winners at this festival.

Some thoughts after the selection process:

– 80 percent of plays, even European ones, are first translated into Russian, and then translators from Kazakhstan take them and translate them into Kazakh. There is a shortage of direct translations from European languages ​​directly into Kazakh—and this has been a long-standing problem, since this was how the translation system was initially structured during Soviet times, when Russian was the lingua franca in the USSR.

– As a consequence of the Soviet translation system, there are very few local translators in Europe and around the world who know Kazakh and are willing to translate from Kazakh into European languages. Russian is always present as a buffer.

– Playwrights and writers, rather than professional translators, most often act as translators of plays. This is because professional translators in Kazakhstan primarily focus on prose and poetry, paying less attention to contemporary drama.

 The Hungarian Eurodram committee has been hosted by the Centre interuniversitaire d’études françaises (Interuniversity Centre for French Studies) at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, the biggest and oldest university in Hungary.

One of its main partners is MEGy, the Hungarian Association of Literary Translators. It used to have a special partnership with Budapest based independent theatre, Stúdió K Színház. Its new theatrical partner is one of the major theatres in Budapest, Örkény Színház.

Activities: On 10 June 2025, certificates were awarded to the translators of the 2025 selected plays at a special event organised within the programme of the Macedonian Theatre Festival Vojdan Chernodrinski in Prilep. On this occasion, excerpts were read from the translated plays, followed by a brief discussion. The anthology of contemporary Romanian plays published in Macedonian by Perun Artis Publisher has been also presented at the event. Also, three members of the Macedonian committee, Ivan Dodovski, Katarina Kocevska and Darko Jan Spasov, have attended the Eurodram General Assembly meeting in Lyon, 22-26 October 2025.

 

Norsk / Norwegian

The Norwegian Committee is still young, but is preparing its fifth selection of plays. And has grown to 11 members, three of them being Members of Honour for specific reasons. Two of the members were recruited over the last year. So the committee has become stable and consistent.  It has not yet got a legal body or any website, waiting for the right moment and opportunities to create and establish those. And has not been able so far to organise public readings of the selected plays. The committee is working on the preparation of organising the GA of Eurodram in Norway in 2027. Contacts have been made, as well as meetings held in order to structure the event the best way, and to receive the coordinators and other participants.

 

Polski / Polish

The Committee is currently in conversation with the theatrical magazine Dialog about the possibility of publishing the yearly winning plays and translations.

For the coming year, the Committee plans to begin developing a network of theatres, translation programs, and other relevant partners in Poland and beyond in order to strengthen collaboration and organize public readings, performances, and translation opportunities for students.

Efforts will also be made to recruit new members representing diverse professional profiles and experiences.

For the last competition, the Committee received 11 plays translated into Polish, of which three were selected:

Română / Romanian
The Romanian committee changed its team in 2025. It consists of 12 members and one new coordinator. (7 women, 6 men).

Coordinator:
Alexandru Ivănoiu is a Romanian based actor, playwright and cultural manager.

Committee:

 Eduard Burghelea is a Romanian actor, cultural manager and film director.
 Codruța Cadar is a Romanian playwright and literary council.
 Ovidiu Caița is a Romanian theatre director. Artistic director of Satu Mare Theatre and professor at Târgu Mureș Theatrical Arts University.
 Irina Crăiță-Mândră is a Romanian theatre director and artistic consultant of Bacovia Theatre, with expertise in communication of cultural works.
 Vangelis Doukoutselis is a Greek-Romanian actor, author, translator and lyricist.
 Catinca Drăgănescu is a Romanian based theatre director and playwright, currently manager of Masca Theatre in Bucharest.
 Jarmila Horáková is a translator of Romanian and Polish literature into Czech language and a lecturer in Romanian literature and culture at Charles University in Prague.
 Jozefina Komporaly is a London-based literary translator from Romanian and Hungarian into English, and Reader in Performance at the University of the Arts London.
 Andrei (Tiberiu) Măjeri is a Romanian theatre director and playwright.
 Mihaela Michailov is a Romanian playwright, teacher of Dramatic Writing at UNATC I.L. Caragiale Bucharest and co-founder of Replika Center of Educational Theater.
 Roberto Merlo is a university professor of Romanian Language and Literature at the University of Turin (Italy) and a theatre translator from Romanian into Italian.
 Mirella Patureau is a research associate at THALIM/CNRS, theatre critic, translator, and a member of SACD (Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers) and AICT (International Association of Theatre Critics).

Selected and previously translated playwrights are now part of it.

The Russian-language Committee recruited the new reader and member  Irina Kisielowa, Vienna, Austria. PhD in Philology (Russian Language and Slavic Languages), translator. Senior Lecturer at the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Vienna and University of Salzburg. https://kisielowa.com/

The Russian-language Committee created a database of established and early-career translators.  It actively promoted EURODRAM calls to Russian-language playwrights and translators, resulting in 7 Russian-language play translations being selected by 6 language committees.

The committee maintains close contact with the Lubimovka Independent Playwriting Festival (https://lubimovka.art/), consults international academic and research projects focusing on Russian-language contemporary drama, and initiates research projects examining post-2022 developments in new drama and artists-in-exile practices.

 

Shqip / Albanian

The Albanian Committee actually consists of eleven members and a new member will be soon added in the official website, Enke Fezollari a well known Greek director and actor of Albanian origin, who joined our committee.

Slovenščina / Slovenian
In May 2025, following the initiative of the Eurodram Cabinet, a Slovenian Committee was established. https://www.slogi.si/eurodram/  These are its members:

  • Tina Mahkota, translator from English and German into Slovenian, lecturer and publisher (coordinator),
  • Alja Predan, translator from English, Croatian and Serbian into Slovenian, dramaturg and theatre scholar,
  • Darko Jan Spasov, translator from English, Slovenian, Czech, Serbian and Croatian into Macedonian, dramaturg, director of the theatre Teatar Komedija in Skopje,
  • Julija Potrč Šavli, translator from Finnish, Estonian and English into Slovenian,
  • Gašper Troha, PhD, researcher and director of the Slovenian Theatre Institute (SLOGI).

On September 23, 2025, the Slovenian Eurodram Committee announced the Eurodram Call for Contemporary Original Plays 2025/2026. The deadline for submissions is December 21, 2025. In October 2025 the Slovenian Eurodram Committee will be represented at the Eurodram General Assembly in Lyon for the first time.

This year the Finnish language committee has selected three plays:

Tanja Šljivar’s Kuten kaikki muutkin vapaat tytöt and Jeton Neziraj’s Kosovolaisen kyynikon kirjoittama näytelmä… are featured in the Noidankehiä anthology, a joint publication by Teatterin Alkukirjasto and the READ Festival. This book is a significant contribution to bringing Eastern European plays to Finnish audiences.

We faced the same issue as in previous years: when it comes to translations, we receive no plays through our open call. Local agents are not interested in promoting translations abroad, and translators also seem reluctant to engage. As a result, we are struggling to involve more people in our network. Theatre translation is such a niche field that there are very few translators who specialize in it.

We also decided not to organize our yearly REA.D festival this time, due to a lack of new plays, limited time, and financial constraints. Unfortunately, our request within the network to share plays that had previously been translated for different committees received very little response. We would truly value closer collaboration with other committees—especially in exchanging knowledge, data, and plays.

Currently, the financial situation in the Finnish cultural field is quite difficult. New cuts on culture are to come also in 2026 despite the promises of the government. The good news is that the Finnish Cultural Foundation has introduced a translation and production grant for international plays, which has brought some fresh international drama into the otherwise stagnant Finnish theatre landscape. Strangely, however, our committee was not invited to be a partner in this project, which was coordinated by Theatre Info Finland.

The Ukrainian committee has 12 members including playwrights, translators, scientists; as well theater professionals, coordinated by Neda Nezhdana.

In 2025 the Ukrainian committee had a call and received 10 translated plays; 3 were selected:

★ Katyn. The Theory of Colors (Katyń. Teoria barw / Katyn. The Theory of Colors), by Julia Holewińska, translated from Polish by Larysa Andriievska

★ Home (Дим), by Nicola McCartney, translated from English by Hanna Kyriienko, Oleksandra Vankevych, Olha Kovaliova, and Tetiana Savchynska

These plays were anounced at the Eurodram page and fb groups, sent to the  theatres.

 

In December 2024 the Ukrainian Committee organised the Drama Festival « Avanscena-Eurodrama » in Kyiv with staged readings of contemporary original and translated plays in Ukrainian as well the discussion about the new drama with the participation of professionals and students writers, actors, directors, critics and journalists. This festival was a continuation of the project of the information collection and Internet library « Avanscena ».

The Organizers are the National center of the theatrical art Les Kurbas and the Kyiv Universities with literary and theatrical professions. These were readings of texts by Ukrainian winners of 2024 and foreign winners of 2023, as well as new translations.

The stage reading of the play « 14 Minutes of Dance » by Sonia Ristic translated from French by Maria Kovalenko selected in 2025 took place at the 1st Avanscena-Eurodrama festival.

Stage readings of selected plays ‘Katyn. Color Theory » by Julia Holewińska and “Home”, by Nicola McCartney are scheduled for the 2st Drama festival « Avanscena-Eurodrama » (December 6, 2025).

The selected plays of Eurodram-2024 were translated into English:

« Ghosts in the Branches » by Valery Puzik was translated by John Freedman, Natalia Bratus;

« Remember the future » by Oleksandr Viter was translated by John Farndon.

The play « Ghosts in the Branches » by Valery Puzik, had stage readings, including the Les Kurbas National center, the Ivan Franko National Theatre (Kyiv), the festival Drama Sprint (Kharkiv).

This play translated in English by John Freedman and Natalia Bratus, was published:

The play « Ghosts in the Branches » and the information about the Eurodram were published in the anthology of Ukrainian plays – winners of various competitions « Drama-Panorama-2025 ».

An exhibition of paintings by Valery Puzik, created at the front, as he is a soldier, was presented at the art festival « Fever February 2014-2025 » in Kyiv, Les Kurbas center. A scientific article « War through the eyes of a warrior-artist » about the play « Ghosts in the Branches » and Valery Puzik’s work by Dr Olena Bondareva was published in the scientific journal « Kurbas Readings ».

Two plays by the winners of the Eurodram 2024, « Ghosts in the Branches » by Valery Puzik and « Alice in the Land of the Ukrs » by Valentin Tarasov, prepared for publication in the anthology of historical and current drama « Crossed by Time », arranged by Oleg Mykolaychuk.

The anthology of plays « Breath of War » by literary students of Kyiv Shevchenko University was arranged by Maryana Shapoval. Publication of these books are scheduled for December 2025.
